…the kitchen gets an update? (or how to protect a painted wall mural)
I originally painted this mural several years ago, and they have always loved it, and still do. The problem was- the homeowners wanted to both repaint the room and get new granite counter tops- they wanted to know how to protect a painted wall mural. Would I come out and do that and then make some minor changes to make the mural work with the new tops?
No problem at all! Most of the mural was taped off using blue painter’s tape, and some areas were masked out with clear self adhesive shelf paper, cut to the edge of the work. Thin clear plastic film protected the artwork from splatters. The painters came in and did their job nicely, and I returned to remove the protection and touch up.
Here’s the mural before with light colored walls and a dark green laminate top- a small ‘back-splash’ in the green color was painted behind the desk to tie the mural and the cabinets together.
The painted green ‘back-splash’ was painted to match the new granite counter-tops.
After the remodel and fresh paint color:
The mural now- showing the new deeper paint color and the new granite counter-tops- just gorgeous, and who would know it was changed?
Look carefully at the photo above. The new ‘granite’ back splash is painted on the mural over the old green, and the ivy painted back in to tie it all together.
New for this year is this ’tile’ back splash behind the cook-top. I worked on this at the same time I was repainting the back-splash of the old mural. No need to clean the grout, here- it’s all paint and perfectly smooth- won’t catch dust or dirt. Three coats of clear water based polyurethane protects the work from splatters. A new exhaust hood will fit in just above it.
What a great project! Thanks for looking!
Hi Ellen,
this is a great looking project, a charming mural; and excellent explanation of the update!
cheers,

Wow Ellen, that is really beautiful and you really “nailed” the new granite!
