I’ve always wanted to try this technique ever since seeing it done on a seafood restaurant ceiling, years ago. I don’t remember what I ate, but I remember being fascinated with that ceiling. I was thrilled when my friend and client asked me to create this under water reflections effect in an entire bathroom for her two teens.
We played around with lots of photographs, trading e-mails back and forth. Finally, we settled on the exact look she wanted in the bathroom. The dancing pattern that the sun coming through clear water creates on the bottom of the shallows was just the perfect look. She had already painted the walls a great shade of aqua as the base coat. I had a blast brushing in the random lighter shades to create the effect of sunlight coming through dancing water.
Everyone who sees this photo recognizes it for what it is, so I think I did a pretty good job.
I bet the kids like going scuba diving in the tropics every day in this bathroom. I sure would!
