Last month I was invited back to the Toasted Oak Grill & Market for additional painting work on more blackboards. You can read about my previous work here.
It’s a bit of a challenge to paint on a chalkboard, it doesn’t really want to accept paint, and colors look different on a black background. This project’s challenge was to create artwork that looked like chalk drawings on the black boards the staff used. They wanted artwork that would enhance the changing menu and social information the staff wanted to post on the main boards in both the Market and the Dining rooms.
I arrived yesterday morning with all of my equipment, took a few photos before thoroughly washing off all the chalk and preparing the surface for paint.

With a nice clean surface, I set to work, first sketching in the designs, laying out all of the lettering and artwork, priming the surface, then adding on the colors. It was an all day project, and I finished up just in time to get a fantastic carry-out Panini made in the market to take home and eat for dinner. Yummy!
