Disguised electrical access cover- 'tile' by Ellen Leigh

Pewabic Wall

Just a small project, but a nice way to dress up a wall. See that leaf tile below the quote? The one that looks like a Pewabic Pottery tile? That is not only a pretty little design element, but is the solution to a problem. You see, the house is very old and beautiful- built in 1929, it has had a few changes made through the years and there is an electrical junction box cover in a weird spot on the wall.

Part of the reason I was hired was to figure out a creative way to make that become a part of the design. I wanted to do something that would fit with the house, and not be too overwhelming.  The rest of the house is very understated, and has much of it’s original character intact. Homes of this era in the Detroit area almost always have a bit of Pewabic Pottery tile somewhere, so I suggested that we make the cover look like a tile. Their eyes lit up- there was Pewabic Pottery tile in the foyer! The floor mat was rolled back, and there were some gorgeous examples for me to use.

Pretty, eh? I used the above photograph to create a mask for the cover, and while I was doing the lettering layout, layered on all of the colors needed to create the ’tile’ illusion.

It’s a nice way to incorporate a design element from another room into the space, don’t you think?
