A few weeks ago a woman called me with a challenge, and I love a challenge! She had a seriously boring floor of 12 by 12 inch ceramic tiles and wondered if I could paint them. I have painted tile before, it can work well depending on the tiles and where they are, so I said “Maybe”.
After taking a look and discussing exactly what she had in mind, I took on the challenge- and it sure was just that! She didn’t want the entire floor painted, just a scattering of tiles- 13 in all, each with a different painting on it. All of the paintings were outdoor scenes, all 4 seasons represented and all with different favorite activities and interests.
So, I spent 5 full days on my knees (yes, I used knee pads!) creating 13 small paintings on the floor. These first photos show how the tiles are scattered across the floors. Then view the gallery to see a close up view of each tile.
I couldn’t get some of the tiles into a group photo, so all aren’t represented in the above shots.
After spending each day on my knees painting, our new beautiful bathroom sure got a work out with a nice long soak in the whirlpool tub. It was both an artistic and physical challenge, but the results are unusual and lovely- painted tiles, a great addition to this very art oriented home.
Love them Ellen, Love the colors too…
Absolutely lovely idea and a great job. Love it!
Clever idea! What did you cover each tile with to protect the scene?
Thanks! There are 3 coats of a matte finish polyurethane on each tile to protect the artwork- it’s damp mop-able and should wear fairly well, she was careful to plan them out to be out of the main traffic areas.
Love these tiles. Great idea.
