What a fun creative project! This client had a special request- ‘new’ cottage style deck furniture, made to look somewhat worn and well used with a cottage like feel to it. Their deck has seen better days, but they are not planning on rebuilding it for a couple of years, it will be stained redwood color for the time being until a decision is made on just what they want. Brand new deck furniture would just accentuate the areas that are less than ideal, so my task was to take some old furniture, used furniture and a couple of new chairs and make them fit their style. So that’s what I’ve been doing for the past couple of weeks- abusing furniture. Below are the before pictures of the items I performed my magic on.
Before:
a teak bar height set, found at a garage sale- the previous owner had applied some sort of finish to it, which had weathered a lot. |
an old oak rocker from my collection. I’ve been thinking of letting this one be deck or porch furniture for a while. |
an old porch side table I’ve been using for years- the chairs fell apart last year, just the table remained |
a small bench or work table I decorated up some years ago, in need of a fresh look |
In addition to the well used pieces above, the client picked up some new, some assembly required, Adirondack chairs for me to coordinate with the used stuff.
I set to work, sanded and cleaned everything thoroughly, repaired anything that was ‘woogedy’ and layered on a series of paint layers, stains, abuse, distressing and more staining for the look I was going for.

the table and chairs showing signs of ‘abuse’ |

the little side table, abused |
the bench/table |
my old oak rocker (already I’m changing my mind on this one) |
Below are the completed pieces, I wish I could keep them all, but they all will be delivered later today, including my favorite rocker. I really love how these turned out, so as soon as I have time, I’ll take the deck furniture I use (seriously in need of an update) and have another abuse session!
After:
the table top- the chairs are more plain, but coordinated |
the old oak rocker- I will be sad to let this one go, I’ve had it since 1980! |
the little side table |
one of the Adirondack chairs- stained and painted in pieces, then assembled- way comfy!!! |
the little bench/table |
Just toooooo cute! |
these two chairs are leaving too, and will go out in the garden as decor |
Delivery is this afternoon, I think they’ll love them, don’t you? I’ll have to take some installed pics as soon as the deck stain dries.
