This project was a fun long distance one! Canvas cutout murals: painted on canvas, the portholes and cannonball were then cut out and shipped to another state and applied by the homeowner just like wallpaper. They add so much to her son’s nautical themed bedroom in Wisconsin.
The home-owner sent me this photo of the canvas cutout murals installed in her son’s nautical themed bedroom.
I painted all three of the murals on a stretched piece of artist’s canvas. Not having a flat wall to mount the canvas on, I constructed a large removable stretcher bar system that clamped to the ceiling joists in my studio. The canvas was stapled to that, and I went to work.
Two of the murals are of port-holes in a ship. The view out of one is mostly ocean, some islands along the horizon, sky and seagulls.
The second port-hole has a lovely two masted sailing ship featured in it, complete with pirate flag. Additionally, I painted a cannonball coming through the wall, shattered plaster and lathe showing where it hit and embedded itself. The pirates attacked!
When the paintings were complete, I brushed on a clear protective finish and allowed that to dry. They were then carefully cut out, rolled on a heavy cardboard tube and shipped to the client with installation instructions. Essentially, they are hung just like canvas backed wall covering, and are remove-able if installed correctly.
