Xander's road construction zone art mural. Cartoonish equipment and road with city in the background. Mural by Ellen Leigh

Construction Zone Art

I love when parents have great ideas for their kid’s play spaces! I was called recently to discuss a small back-ground mural for a lower level playroom (I’ll blog about that next week, after it’s done). After we decided what to paint for that area, we went up to the second floor to discuss another and much larger wall that they wanted done first, in Xander’s play area up there.

Nice big loft area with one bright red wall, one bright yellow striped wall, all the kinds of toys a boy could want- trucks, a railroad table, construction equipment, tools, cars, dinosaurs and places to keep everything and lounge around on the floor too. What a wonderful play space! My wall was painted a medium taupe color, like dark concrete. Their idea was to have a road that randomly spelled out Xander’s name and some road construction equipment to go along with it with a cartoonish style to it. As a background I suggested a city-scape, and dirt piles in the foreground to finish off the lower part where a sofa would go. Construction zone art!

Cool, eh?

I had a blast painting this over the past couple of days, laying out the design and base colors on Wednesday, then adding in the details and outlines on Thursday.

Can’t have road construction without some orange barrels- there’s three of them in this mural (of course).

Xander’s mom had a special request on Thursday morning and asked to have some tools painted on a small section of wall between two doorways. Cool idea, and I was happy to accommodate her- she had the tools, I had the paints needed already on my palette, so it only took a few extra minutes to paint them.

Gotta have tools!

Can’t wait to go back next week to work on his play house, adding in all the fun details we planned for it.

So, boys and girls- wouldn’t you have loved to have a wonderful play area like this one as a small child?
